Is the underwater waterfall worth it?

Yes if you want the picture and you take a helicopter; no if you expect the waterfall to be the whole flight. The pass off Le Morne is one or two orbits of a minute or two each. What surrounds it, Grand Bassin, the Black River Gorges and Chamarel from above, is what most people end up talking about at dinner. On a tight budget the guided hike and a catamaran day give you Le Morne without the illusion, and that is an honest trade. Anyone prone to motion sickness should think twice before any of the flights.

First trip, you want the photo. Fly, and fly a helicopter that passes Le Morne. Both the 40-minute airport flight and the 35-minute flight with transfers do. Conchita from the Netherlands wrote that “the optical illusion of the waterfall near Le Morne Brabant was the highlight”, and that is the common reaction when the light is right. Book a late-morning slot; see the best time.

Watching the money. The hike up Le Morne Brabant with a guide from the village, then a catamaran day out of La Gaulette. Four hours on a UNESCO mountain and six on the lagoon with dolphins in Tamarin Bay if they oblige, and a rough view of the sandfall from 556 m that will not photograph. Family with children under 7. Helicopter, not seaplane; the seaplane on GetYourGuide takes nobody under 7 and does not see the waterfall anyway. Infants under 2 fly free on the scenic flight and children 2 and over pay full rate. Under-12s must be supervised, and the operator will want everyone’s weight.

Prone to motion sickness, pregnant, back or heart problems. The operators exclude these on the helicopter flights and the seaplane, and they are right to. What disappoints people

Three things, and none of them is the sandfall itself. The first is expectation: people imagine hovering over a waterfall for twenty minutes, and it is one or two orbits in a flight that is mostly the crossing. The second is the shape of the scenic flight: 35 minutes in the air inside a three-hour window with a driver, and a few of the 98 reviewers wanted more air time. The third is weather, which holds flights in the wet season and turns the plume brown after rain. None of that is the operator’s fault, and all of it is avoidable if you read how to see it before you book.

What surprises people

The rest of the loop. Grand Bassin from above, a crater lake at about 550 m with a 33 m Shiva at the gate. Kanaka crater, which is just a forested hole and somehow one of the best things on the flight. The Black River Gorges, 6,574 hectares of native forest that look like nothing from the road and like another country from a few hundred metres up. Chamarel’s coloured earths and the 100 m waterfall next to them. Douillard from France put it plainly: “seeing the sites we visited on the ground from the air is very nice”. It is a flight over the south-west with a pass over the illusion in the middle, and it is better than the sum of those parts.
