Underwater waterfall tours in Mauritius: all seven compared
I spent six seasons on the helicopter apron at the airport, and the question I answered most was not about the flight. It was whether the thing in the photo is real. It is, in the sense that the photo is not doctored: sand and silt slide off the shallow shelf around Mauritius (no deeper than about 150 m) into a drop-off of more than 4,000 m, and from height the pale streak in dark water reads as a river going over a cliff. It is not real in the sense of moving water. Nothing falls. If you want the longer explanation before you spend money, read is the underwater waterfall real first.
That matters for the shopping list, because it rules out most of what gets sold as an “underwater waterfall tour”. You cannot see it from a boat, from Le Morne public beach, from a snorkel or a dive, and from the summit of Le Morne Brabant you get its rough shape on a calm morning and nothing on a choppy one. The flights that see it
All three are helicopters and all three fly the same corner of the island. The 40-minute airport flight is the one whose route is built around the sandfall: Gate 3 at SSR airport, then Grand Bassin, Kanaka crater, the Black River Gorges, Flic en Flac and the Black River coast, the waterfall off Le Morne, Chamarel, and home along the south coast. The scenic flight with hotel transfers is the one most people have flown: 98 reviews at 4.6, a 35-minute flight inside a 3-hour door-to-door window with a driver, and a west-coast route from Tamarin over Île aux Bénitiers to Le Morne, then Chamarel and the mountains behind Port Louis. It needs two people to book and four to operate, and the aircraft seats four or six by weight. The other way into the air
The seaplane is a proper flight and people love it: 4.5 from 121 reviews, take-off from water, 15 or 30 minutes counted engine start to engine stop, private to your party. It also lifts from a hangar beside the LUX* Grand Gaube car park on the north-east coast, roughly 80 km and an hour and three-quarters by road from Le Morne, and flies the north-east lagoon — Île aux Cerfs, the Grand Port side, reefs, the odd turtle. It does not go anywhere near the sandfall. Book it for a water take-off, not for the waterfall. The rest is on the seaplane page.
On the ground and on the lagoon
The Le Morne Brabant hike is the best-rated thing on this site, 4.9 from 638, four hours with guides born in the village, and it is the only ground option that shows you anything of the illusion at all — the rough shape, from 556 m, if the sea is flat. The catamaran is six hours from the Anglers’ Club jetty at La Gaulette: Tamarin Bay for dolphins, snorkelling, a barbecue, Crystal Rock and Île aux Bénitiers. The southern road tour drives eight hours through Trou aux Cerfs, Grand Bassin, the gorges and Chamarel and ends with half an hour at Le Morne beach. All three are on the Le Morne tours page. None of them sees the waterfall, and I would rather say that here than have you find out on the boat.

Which one, then
Two questions settle it. Do you want to see the illusion, or do you want a good day near Le Morne? And if the first, is anyone in the party under seven, over 105 kg, or prone to motion sickness? Under-7s and heavier passengers rule out the seaplane anyway; the helicopters take children of any age at full rate from two. Motion sickness is a reason to think hard about all of them. Then check the forecast: mid-morning, calm sea, May to November is when the sand plume has the most contrast, and I go through that on best time to see it.
If the flight is out of reach, the hike plus the catamaran is a good two days for a fraction of the cost of one seat, and you will have stood on the mountain the illusion sits under. You just will not have seen the sand slide. Be clear with yourself about which you are buying.

Can I see it from a boat or while snorkelling?
No. The effect only exists from a few hundred metres up, where the pale sand sliding off the shelf edge contrasts with the deep water. At sea level it is a flat lagoon and a reef pass. There is nothing at the bottom but a slope of sand — see how deep is it.
Is the seaplane cheaper than the helicopter?
