My verdict: the same loop as the airport flight, five minutes longer, with the whole aircraft to your party and a car sent to your hotel both ways. Grand Bassin, the Kanaka crater, the Black River Gorges, the west coast, the sandfall off Le Morne, Chamarel and back. Up to five people, priced per aircraft. Nobody has left a review yet, so I have nothing to quote and I will not invent anything. What I can say is that the loop is the one I know best, and that a private machine makes sense for four or five people travelling together and for very few others.

Who it’s for

Families or groups of four or five, because then the per-aircraft price divides into something close to a seat on a shared flight and you get every window. Photographers who want to ask the pilot for a second orbit without four strangers voting against it. Special occasions, which is the plain way of saying proposals and anniversaries; the operator has flown plenty. And anyone who wants a fixed slot without a minimum-numbers clause hanging over it.

It is not for a couple who simply want to see the waterfall. Two people paying for five seats is the most expensive way to do this, and the 40-minute shared flight covers the same ground for two seats. Weights are still asked for at booking, seats are still allocated for balance, and a passport copy is required with the booking. Not for pregnant women, back problems or anyone who gets motion sick, and no drones.

The day in order

  1. A driver collects you at the hotel and brings you to the helipad.
  2. Briefing, headsets, weights confirmed. Meals are not included, so eat first.
  3. Grand Bassin crater lake and the 33 m Shiva statue.
  4. The Kanaka crater.
  5. Black River Gorges National Park, then out over the west coast.
  6. Flic en Flac and the Black River coast heading south.
  7. The underwater waterfall off Le Morne. With the aircraft to yourself, this is where you ask for the extra orbit.
  8. Chamarel and the coloured earths, then back to the helipad and the car.

If there are five of you, put your weights in honestly and early. The operator needs them to balance the aircraft, and a group that turns out heavier on the day than on the form can end up split or bumped. It is the most common apron problem I dealt with, and the easiest to avoid.
